Relying the increasingly strengthened disciplinary foundation of journalism and art and design, the department of Journalismintegrates
superior resourcesso as to form the news and media mode with Xijing characteristics, adapted to the development of the times. Currently
the student population is of over 1300. The Department has set up bachelor programs and associate degree programs. The bachelor of
journalism is of two major fields, new (web) media and broadcasting and television. Higher Vocational and Specialized Education
granting associate degrees is of four programs, i.e., news editing and production, application of digital media, artistic design of
digital media, design and making ofvisual communication, of which the program ofdesign and making ofvisual communication（formerly
artistic design of decoration）is a key program at provincial level.
The department focuses on the training of practical and applicable ability, takes the reforms of teaching philosophy, course content,
teaching means and methods as a breakthrough point, takes construction and development of web courses, quality courses and excellent
courses as a support, takes the on campus and off campus training bases as a backing，focuses on a combination of classroom teaching
and on campus and off campus practice，and cultivates high-level application-oriented talents who have a good command of professional
skills and theoretical knowledge，and have acquired the capability of being engaged in various media and artistic design posts.
The Department of Journalism has established a strong faculty with reasonable composition in terms of educational background, titles,
research interests and age. Currently we have53teachers，of which49are full time，four have senior titles, one is a reporter, and two
have international education background.
During the past two years, the faculty undertook ten projects at provincial and university levels, and published three textbooks and
more than 20 research papers in referred journals. The faculty directed one student Project of Innovation and Starts-up at national
level, and directed students to participate in disciplinary competitions, which won over 100 prizes at provincial and national levels.
We have stable training and internship bases (see the column of training and internship bases for details).
Job opportunities and the disciplinary prospect
The development of technology and innovation of mediaafford good opportunities for the development of news and art professions. In
addition to the needs of traditional media and designing companies for talents, more and more enterprises begin to pay attention to
image of their brand，and lay emphasis on the image packaging of the company and its products. Publicity and design are essential posts
of any enterprises and companies, and good advocates and designers fuel the development of image and market, which is also an important
basis for survival and development of media and art professions.
For a bachelor degree：Freshmen should be familiar with their majors and expected occupations, their interests in the professions
and occupation consciousness should be cultivated, and they should understand the requirements for the ability in terms of computer,
foreign language and other skills a college student should acquire; Sophomores should basically complete the study of core courses in
the specialized subject，master basic theoretical knowledge and abilities and skills,and be prepared for taking vocational skill
examinations, and acquire various qualification certificates; Juniors should strengthen professional study and practical training in
light of social demands for the ability of the profession, and actively participate in social practice, and their ability in terms of
professional adaptation and social practice; Seniors should finish the study of all courses,, be ready in terms of graduation design
（dissertation）and/or applying for a graduate program, take an internship job, accumulate professional experience and start a career.
For an associate degree：Freshmen should be familiar with their majors and expected occupations, their interests in the professions
and occupation consciousness should be cultivated；Sophomores should be definite in terms of professional study interest，choose a
major, strengthen professional study and practical training contrapuntally，and acquire the qualification certificates accordingly;
Juniors should actively participate in social practice, their ability in terms of professional adaptation and social practice should be
cultivated, and they should complete the study of all courses, prepare graduation design well, define personal career goals, and seek a
Be strict with and standardize management measures
Centering on the talent training model of“one body with multiple wings”proposed by the university, we train application- and
skill-oriented media talents, and offer individualized and diversified talent training plans to the students.
Training talents with enterprises jointly, the higher vocational talent training carries out “1.5+0.5+ 1”（1.5=for one and a half
years studying professional knowledge, 0.5=for half a year studying at a workshop,or project studying,1=for one year carrying out school-enterprise joint teaching, or internship）。The program of journalism carries out the talent training model of“1+1+3”，which enables
students to be adapted to the one main development orientation of web and new media，and after the assessment of profession and ability
at the media workshop, students acquire three abilities of“information publicity and communication,media marketing and planning, and
application of convergent media technology”.
Workshop teaching runs through all the university study. Sophomores of higher vocational students and juniors of bachelor students
study at Xijing dynamic and static media studio.
Establish a confederation of media art studios,cooperate with several Medias and art studios, and jointly train media talents. Each
member of the confederation is responsible for one aspect of the professional study or a course, and eventually complete the practical
Encourage students to innovate and start a business,and provide advice and conditions for students to innovate and start up. For
example, a 2012 entrance student named Wang Sibo of the journalism major started a Digital Company of Calabash Technology, whose
business scope is mainly in new media marketing and promotion.
Project teaching runs through professional education, which is mainly of disciplinary competition events, simulation projects, and
business projects, integrated into corresponding classes. Examinations are also diversified, guided by the assessments on the project
